Thinking creatively about uses for the AE 5 systems

Tuesday, November 29th 2011, 11:12pm

The thought occurs that the AE 5 systems can be used for far more than just controlling computer cooling systems. They are capable of reading sensors and actuating relays, controlling voltages, etc. in response to the sensor readings. And a relay can control just about anything. They can also just read and display sensor data without acting on it, if you like.

I've only had my AE 5 LT for about 10 hours, and had other things on my mind too, but here are some quick ideas, just off the top of my head:
  • A temperature sensor could mounted on the output heatsinks of a stereo power amplifier, and linked, via the AE 5, to a relay that would control the electric power to the amplifier, shutting the unit off if the AE 5 detects the output stage approaching an overheated state.
  • One could extend the lead on a temperature sensor and use it to monitor the temperature outside of their home, apartment, etc.
  • For that matter, one could use a temp sensor to monitor the inside temperature of their home, etc. if the room with the computer is not near the thermostat.
  • You could use multiple temperature sensors to monitor the temperature in several rooms of your home and use the readouts to either find the average delta between the rooms and what the thermostat is reading/set for, or to balance the heating/air-conditioning system, so that all rooms are at the same temperature.
With a bit of thought, and letting your mind work freely and creatively, you can probably find many uses for these controllers. The AE 5 unit can be mounted in a computer and the sensor & control leads extended, or the AE 5 can be mounted elsewhere and the power & USB leads to the computer lengthened.

All you have to do is make sensors that convert whatever you are monitoring into either temperature readings, or pulse rates for the flow meter inputs, and then you can utilize the intelligence of the AE 5 systems to control or display whatever you want. Not just computer cooling systems. It would take a small amount of work to make up sensors like this. But it would not be too much for someone versed in electronics.
Dogs live by four simple rules: Eat, Sleep, Play, Love. The world would be a much better place if we humans lived by only these rules as well.
