So I noticed while updating my NVIDIA graphic drivers (to NV 306.02) that the installer prompted me to first close AS 2012. No other applications needed to be closed - just AS. I closed AS and the install of the graphics drivers proceeded.
My video cards idle at 324 MHz when they're not being used, 1137 MHz when used for light 3D operations (e.g., games) and 1300 MHz when taxed (e.g., in games). I noticed that when I open AS 2012 my GPU clock would go from 324 MHz to 1137 MHz. This does not happy with other non-gaming apps (e.g., it doesn't happen when using other monitoring apps such as AIDA64, etc.).
You are right, it does indeed seem to use the GPU, albeit momentarily. When I open AS directly into my Overview Pages the GPU clock and memory shoots up, but only for a couple of seconds before it settles down again.
Usually my GPU clocks will reset after minimizing AS but with the latest beta this is not always the case. Sometimes I have to completely close AS which is obviously not good. Hopefully we can get an official word on whether this is intended if so why.
