This is BOTHERSOME in the extreme - nothing says that it is designed to happen, there seems no way to stop it, it seems to be selective in how (and when?) it runs and what it processes (.DBFs consistently UNtouched, along with several "System Restore....") files and I only EVER want to DEfragment anything WHEN I SAY SO! It's MY MACHINE, DAMMIT!!!

With thanks to Jim Saunders of Microsoft, who posted the following in answer to my query over at UT:
"You could try adding this new DWORD value under the following reg key to disable it:.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout?
EnableAutoLayout? - DWORD - Value = 0
Normal caveats about dangers of editing the registry apply.
Apparently, this was added to XP as part of the changes made to enhance boot time. It's supposed to run at idle times, no more frequently than once every three days, and stop if other computer activity occurs.".
In a later comment, Jim Saunders did suggest that the feature be left ON.
