Lubing the gaskets? Double Protect Ultra & Leakshield.

Tuesday, August 20th 2024, 6:55pm

What lube or grease would be compatible with the Double Protect Ultra?
I'd like to lube the gaskets in my Ultitube, as I'm losing quite a lot of pressure there.
My positive pressure leak test indicated a reservoir cap issue. Which is fine as the original cap has a very good grip, but I was surprised how tight it had to be. It had to be tightened very manly. But the thing is hand tight on the Leakshield isn't going to cut it apparently and it has a poor grip too. I may need some trickery here.
What lube or grease would be compatible with the DP Ultra, as I need some extra sealing.
Thanks!

Don't do it. I almost stripped the plastic threads on the Leakshield as a result. "Hand tight" feels a lot different when things are lubed, plus I tried to make sure there's no air leak, so I did tighten it up hard on purpose.
When the seal is clean and dry, you can't really strip the threads by hands only. And the lube also didn't help with the air leak. Well, it sort of did to some extent, but didn't eliminate it completely.
Plus the grease would contaminate the coolant long term, even though I cleaned it up and it never touched the coolant. I guess the vapor condensation would wash it into the coolant eventually.

a tiny amount of silicone grease is essential to successfully reusing o-rings, but yes have to be careful with overtightening.

I had a recent leak situation with an old EK-RES 3X reservoir, and in the end I simply tried with a Torx style cap that was much easier to tighten in a controlled fashion and the leaky port cleared up (that reservoir is finicky and most of its ports are recessed making it tough.

I’m sorry it went hard for you but hopefully your build is okay now.
