Multiple fans issue **Solved**

  • First up. I am currently running to radiators in my setup. I have 4 fans on each radiator. Each radiators fans are daisy chained together to allow one fan controller port each on the A5. I'm not sure if i have wired them together wrong for use in the A5 or if something else is wrong. I can not get the fans to run or even read in A5 but when i plug the chains into a regular fan controller they run fine. I have chained all three wires from each fan throughout the chain. Each fan is rated at .30 amps for a total of 1.2 amps per chain. It is my understanding that the limit for each channel is 1.65 amps so i should be safe there. Is there an obvious problem/fix in any of the information posted thus far?

  • Added history. The aquaero was working just fine about 3 weeks ago. At that time i had to tear down my pc to start a new build. So for the last 3 weeks it has been sitting in an old tower with no power. It had individual fans hooked up to 3 channels, 1 fan each. All curve controllers worked fine at that time. Fast forward to last night. System receives first power in weeks and now has (2) 4 fan chains as described in the previous paragraph hooked up to the first 2 fan amps. No settings in A5 had been changed at that time and nothing worked.

  • **UPDATE**Upon further testing even individual fans rated at .14 amps aren't working on any of the channels. Either i've gone stupid (quite possible) from not having to have set anything for so long or there is something wacky with something. I checked the single fans on my fan controller and they worked fine so it isnt the fans. Aquaero is showing zero everything under fan data except electronic which has been a solid 19c since my system has been up and running. Just to check i deleted all of my controllers and just set all 4 fan channels to 100% min and max fan power. That should get the fans working instantly upon plugging them in right? Please someone just tell me im forgetting an obvious step to get them working!!

  • **UPDATE #2** I have reupdated the firmware as well as tried a restore to default. I have checked all power cables. On the assumption i somehow cooked something i busted out a voltmeter. I checked my regular fan controller on an empty channel with the speed knob at 100% It pulled roughly 12 volts. I turned the knob as low as it would go. This setting does not turn the power off to the fans apparently as i tested that on my two loaded channels and those fans kept spinning. So when testing this empty channel at its lowest setting i pulled a 00.1 reading consistently. This was repeated on 3 other empty channels on this controller. When i checked 2 of the fan ports on the aquaero i got the same 00.1 reading. So between that and the fact that those channels are maintaining roughly 20c temps i am guessing they are still operational??

  • **UPDATE 2/18/2013 0526** So while testing multiple things over the course of the night i have noticed the A5 unit being sensitive to my touch. I would often see the A5 reboot itself on its lcd screen and it tried shutting down my pc numerous times. I had trouble with this when i first got the unit but dont touch it often so i lived with it. not sure if its the grounding issue some have had or not. So i went ahead and removed it from the mounting brackets in my caselabs case and its resting on a plastic dvd box. Regular channels will still not work, however i noticed on channel 4 the PWM controlled option lets me get the fan going and everything reads properly. However RPM and Power controlled options do not work even on channel 4. I will try remounting the device in my case in a bit and seeing if i can still get the PWM on 4 to work. At least now i know its successfully getting the 12v to at least one fan controller.

When wiring up fans to work on the same channel only one should have all three wires connected, the others should only have the positive and negative power wires connected. If all the wires are connected the controller receives RPM info from all the fans at once and that can cause problems.

Can't help with the rest sorry.

I was reading something along those lines as to only one rpm cable. If i can get a regular fan to work on the A5 i will go in and snip 3 of the RPM signal wires so only one is sending a signal. However i'm guessing there is a deeper rooted problem since even a solo fan will not run on any of the channels. And i also managed to find the A5 on my devices and printers list which allowed me to check some power configurations but even with all of them enabled the A5 still will not boot my pc :( Thanks for the info though!

I am not sure specifically if anything is wrong with your Aquaero, but I have found what I believe is a bug in the Aquasuite software. If a fan channel is using a curve controller and the configuration is changed, sometimes that fan channel will refuse to function.
The fix for this can be as simple as removing Aquasuite completely including deleting everything the uninstall doesn't remove, then reinstalling, to doing a hard reset on the Aquaero.
I've seen this happen 3 times now with my unit and Aquasuite.
Twice I had to do a hard reset by jumpering the 5,6,7,8 temp sensors to force the unit into recovery mode.

I've seen the same thing happen with Power Adjusts, which is why I say it's sometimes software related. I've told Aquacomputer about it, whether or not they can reproduce/fix it I don't know.
I tend to change things around a lot, so usually if there is a bug somewhere it will find me. :)

Another thing that has happened is when a problem already exists, and the Aquasuite is upgraded/reinstalled, the option exists to "use prior settings" or something like that. Better to reconfigure everything from scratch as any existing problem will get carried over into the new install, which is why I say delete absolutely everything Aquasuite related before reinstalling software.
I believe there's a directory under Program Data which the Aquasuite uninstall does not remove.

At this point i'm willing to try anything. Can you point me in the direction of a good walk through of the jumper action as well as the hard reset. The manual doesn't specify anything and i'd like a step by step if possible so i don't risk screwing this thing up. regardless thanks for this info. Hopefully this will clear things up for me as a software glitch sounds very likely since mechanically everything i can test appears to be functioning correctly.

While trying to learn how to do a reset i came across another big problem. Simply touching the left side mounting bracket (mind you the A5 is only resting on a plastic dvd case and not mounted to the actual frame of my pc) was enough to cause the A5 to do a reload of sorts and my pc instantly began a shutdown sequence. Should this be happening or is this something shorting itself out somehow?

I'm in the proccess of writting a little Basic guide thing for the Aquaero (nowhere near finnished yet).... If you scroll down to the bottom of this LINK It'll take you through the steps that need to be done to do a "Hard Reset", Don't worry it's a link to an LT part of the Guide.. It's the same proccess for doing a "Hard Reset" for all Aquaero 5 units...

It may help, But hope you can get sorted either way :)..

Thanks for the link. Now i just have to find a way to insulate my fingers since apparently just me touching the device shuts down my pc now which would make pushing buttons on it a bit tricky :(

  • I actually looked at that page in the last couple of days and i must say its great. A quick question though. Where do i come up with 4 jumpers? Do i just need to make a plug that bridges both pins together for each of those 4 sensors? Kind of like a short?

Thanks glad you like it :).... I use a small Allen key (short side) around 1.5 to 2mmm I think it is, to short across the four temp sensors connections, I've also used a small long screw, anything metal & small enough to just slide between the sensor pins while making contact with the pins will do it.. Just be careful & should be no issues.. You can on the other hand buy four little shorting jumpers like is used to short jumpers on say a Motherboard type thing..

Sorry but can't say whats causing your unit to shut down things when you touch it?... Never come across that one before :(...
I know a while back some had issues with the unit having earthing problems when installed in certain cases.. the 800D was one, But I just adjusted the button sensitivity by lowwering it down to 5 I think it was & it sorted things for me..

Ok, i think i know what you are saying. Do all 8 pins need to touch each other or does each pair need to be shorted individually? I have some old case power switches that plug into the MB. So i plan to just snip those two wires and connect them together. do this to 4 different plugs, one for each sensor and i should be good? Not sure about the grounding issue either. I just switched from a coolermaster haf x to a caselabs case so that could be a partial issue though its always been finicky. I plan to remove the entire metal frame work and screen and just mount the pcb board in my computer to see if that helps. I have adjusted the screen sensitivity all the way down and even disabled the buttons with no luck.

  • Hopefully a moderator or knowledged person can tell me if the pcb board that has the screen on it is needed for the general function of the unit or if i can disconnect that half of the unit from the other half and still have it work. I figure its time to get down to basics and then possibly build back up from there if i can get that to work.

  • Ok. Recovery mode successful. Reinstalled firmware successfully. Still have no frame or touch screen which has eliminated the shorting out problem that kept shutting down the pc. I doubt i will bother trying to reinstall the frame and mounting brackets and will likely attempt to mod it to bolt directly to the front of my case and call it a day if that works. Otherwise i'll ditch the screen completely and mount it internally.


  • **BIG THANKS to all that offered help and guidance. While it is not a fully functioning unit like i bought it is working in its current state at least.

The easiest thing to use for jumpers is the same thing you use on the motherboard to reset cmos, for example. You can probably buy them or they often come in pc tool kits. I have a bunch accumulated from many years of owning and working on pc's.
A piece of bare wire would work just as well.

Anyway, glad you got it working.
Hopefully this will be fixed in upcoming versions of Aquasuite as I'm thinking it's a software/firmware glitch.

I have found it is easiest for me to use an internal usb cable to connect all the right channels for the hard reset. My aquaero is still mounted in the case. Those jumpers are hard to find when you drop them. I think the cable I'm using is from an old t-balancer controller. Just make sure the colors are the same on each channel.
