The problem is, that not the whole Software is OpenmSource. If you want to write own Software for the Ae, you have an Server which controls the Ae. With your Software you can control the Server, not the AE (so it's safer and you cannot destroy the Ae by doing something wrong). This server does only run under Windows, in Linux you must control the Ae directly over the USB-HID, which is much more difficult, because you does not have the information how to do so.
For the translation you can write an Mail to the support, maybe they accept your offer to help :.

That's right.
To control the aquaero in linux you'll have to get Access via the HID-class. It's like accessing a mouse or a keyboard. The structure of the data is in our describtion (support->downloads). So if you get informations how to access HIDs under linux it should be easy for you to communicate with the aquaero. You can find linux HID-samples with google.

I already started programming a linux program to connect to the usb-hid...
It will take some time, because if not that much spare time.

I'm developing on a linux kernel 2.6, it should work on kernel 2.4, too.

When I've finished the first stable (but still incomplete) version I will publish it here.
