Is PWM control of Noctua fans with PWM splitters still problematic 5 years later?

Hi everyone,

Back in 2019-2020 I built a system with a large number (22 to be exact) Noctua iPPC-2000 PWM fans controlled by two Aquaero 6 devices.

And it did not go very well.

Apparently Noctua had recently switched their PWM circuitry in their fans. While it still worked very well with one or two fans per channel, once you used 8-way or 9-way powered splitters to control more fans, the PWM control worked very poorly, with output something like this:

0% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
10% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
20% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
30% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
40% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
50% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
60% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
70% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
80% PWM -> 0% Fan Speed
85% PWM -> 20% Fan Speed
90% PWM -> 50% Fan Speed
95% PWM -> 75% Fan Speed
100% PWM -> 100% Fan Speed

This made them very difficult to control. I briefly tried narrowing the range in the Aquasuite to just 80% to 100%, but even that just resulted in awkward, peaky control.

I contacted Noctua, and they were great about it. They took the fans back (despite them all having been opened) and replaced them with older lot number fans with the old PWM circuitry, and this system is running well with these fans to this date.

I am now embarking on a build which will use a large number of 200mm Noctua fans. (unfortunately I don't have much choice with the fans for this build)

Does anyone know if current Noctua fans still misbehave when splitting PWM signals? Or have they fixed that issue in the last 5 years?

as far as i know that was mostly the case for industrial fans that were not designed to be ran on splitters at all, and they did get rid of that particular circuit a few years ago. I don't think their consumer line had any problem, so the 200mm should be fine. ut even then, if you mean to connect lots of fans on the same PWM signal, it could be a good idea to use a powered hub with buffered PWM signal instead of simple powered splitters.

If the aquacomputer controller functions for a small number of fans then you can use this: Akasa FP5 pwm splitter which has a molex plug so you cause no load on the aquacomputer controller. I'm running this with an quadro.
