Ultitube problems...

Freitag, 22. Januar 2021, 13:34

Morning all,

On the strength of my recommendations and advocacy of my own AquaComputer kit, a friend has invested in an Ultitube 200 with pump top as an upgrade to his old acrylic reservoir.

He's running it with his EK D5 PWM and using Mayhems X1 clear fluid.

The problem is that with the new res, his system is running 6ºC hotter than with his old EK res combo.

It's also notably noisier than with the old acrylic res.

He's tried it several times with and without the filter in place. He's bled the system completely, so there's no air stuck anywhere... being both an award-winning overclocker and an HVAC specialist mechanic, I believe him when he says that.
He's even tried using it with both the AC and EK dampening mounts.

The only thing that has changed is the reservoir.

What would cause such a drop in performance and noise increase like this?

Dramatically lower flow rate or an error with temps measurement. Clogged waterblocks?

Mkay, you are describing your friends' problem, so let me tell my friend's story :)

One of my penmates had his flow totally stuck after only adding new Watercool res, a new additional 360 rad and ZMT tubes. He tried all, thinking he somehow made a mistake somewhere in flow direction, or there is large air bubbles in both his pumps. Bled the loop multiple times, tried it both with external Mora and without.

I said him that he checked everything except opening hs waterblocks. He resisted for some time, trying some other things (luckily he had a mps400 that showed total zeroes, and in his reservoirs he saw how really thin was incoming stream)
Finally, he opened his blocks and both were totally clogged. He cleaned them, restart his loop and flow was perfect, better then before.

You should also be thinking that is a bit strange behavior if he only changed reservoir and temps (probably coolant temp) rise 6c having all configuration the same.

Regarding noise, an award winning overclocker and mechanic should clearly understand that reservoir itself cannot be a noise source. So, more noisy operation is due to new reservoir mount, rather bad pump vibration dampening. It is also possible (but not likely) that pump was installed incorrectly in a new Ultitube. Usually you need to use provided with res o-ring for the pump, to get correct gaps inside its working chamber. Also it worth mentioning, that if there is something clogged in his loop, it is normal that pump is running louder then if the loop is perfectly clean and flow rate is high (meaning loop having low restriction would be more silent, then restrictive loop with the same pump and its operating power)

If there is some way to check how's current flow rate, I'd checked it first. And, just like my friend, checked my blocks.

Sorry, yes, it's definitely the res mount that is noisier... We're not sure why, though. I'd have expected a precision-made mount from AC to be vastly superior to a crappy plastic EK one.

Flow-wise, it's definitely not blocks. That's the first thing he stripped down to
check, and he cleans his own more in a year than most people do in their
entire service life.

No way of measuring flow, but when filling the loop it rushes through with no problems.
Pump vibration is actually worse with the AC mounts, so he's using the EK ring with the 'teeth' on the inside.

I have EK res with "Revo" mount, and ULTITOP with aquacomputer mounts. In terms of vibration dampening, EK mount is vastly superior to ULTITOP one. Though, I found both mounts not good enough and added even more dampening to them, in different ways because of different approaches they are designed.

Not sure how good is ULTITUBE one, but EK Revo mount is definitely good, both in terms of vibration dampening but also pump can be turned any angle user needs..

Well, if your friend is sure that flow is good, there is no other answer besides measuring error (regarding temps), and as I said, EK-Revo mount is really better then any Aquacomputer mounts I saw. Feel free to add your own additional vibration dampening, as I did on both of my pumps' mounts.

I'm surprised... I thought AC was pretty much top end stuff all round.

Certainly my own D5 NEXT combo is far better than my old EK one...
But I'm still puzzled as to why temperatures would be so different just from switching pump tops....

Look yourself, EK revo has two changeable thick rubber rings, pump with top or res can be rotated any angle inside it. Rings not only dampen vibrations, but also absorb noise. Ultitube mounts are thin rubber thumb screws, that cant even hold the tube vertically without an additional top mount, and res ports can be directed only one way. I also have D5 NEXT w/Ultitop combo and EK's one is definitely quieter.
