Shortcircuit aquagrafx ??

Samstag, 27. August 2005, 13:53

Hi all,
I recently installed a aquagrafx 6800 on a XFX 6800 Ultra.
I used the 4 existing metal screws and the metal X on the back to retain the GPU, and the plastic screws from AC for the rest. After powerup, nothing.....only a strange smell :'( , bye,bye graphic card.
So to the shop, and bought myself a new one, a Leadtek PX6800 Ultra. Installed the aquagrafx again, but used this time the 4 metal screws and the X from my old XFX card, because the Leadtek screws, didnt fit on the aquagrafx.
Powerup.....smoke...smell.....dead. That was my second card.
It seems that both times the top voltage-regulator (U17) burned down.
Reassembled it, and took it back to the store. Nice people there, they gave me a new one, after i said this card didnt work ;D .
But now i am afraid to give it a third try. Am i missing something ???? Should i isolate something ??

i got 2 XFX 6800 Ultra's with aquagrafx 6800's installed :o
but i'm still working things out wiring & stuff. so not fired her
up yet, hmmm maybe the wrong phase to use atm.

1. did you put thermal paste on the little transiter thingys.

2. as you used the xfx X bracket on the back. maybe you put
it the wrong way round. one side has little spacers to keep it
away from the circuitry.

3. i fitted my aquagrafx a while ago. just looked at my set up
again & i have not fitted the X bracket at the back. i cant
remember y i didn't but if must have been for a reason.

gonna have to recheck my set up again

hope ya get things sorted

oh yeah now i remember,

i left the X bracket off because the screws supplied with my
aquagrafx blocks were not long enough for me to get a good
contact to all the bits that needed it. so replace them with
longer screws but they were a different tread to the X
bracket.
so i left it off as i though that the only reason it was there
was to stop flexing around the GPU, now that i had it bolted
to a solid block of ally. i put some plastic washers under the
metal bolt heads & left it at that.

I have been hearing reports from others who also say the bolts aren't long enough here in the states. For as expensive as this stuff is you would think AC could get the right screws in the kit. ::)

@ ze@lot,

1. yes, i did
2. no, im sure i left some space between the plate and the circuitboard.
3. im gonna check it out with a multimeter
