Two Farbwerk Nano's on powered USB hub in monitor

Samstag, 19. Dezember 2020, 17:58

Hi all, I'm new to the forums!

I am trying to get 2 farbwerk Nano's working from my display's powered USB Hub (Asus ROG PG278QR). Both Nano's work as normal when plugging into the PC front USB port.
Reason for trying 2 Nano units is that my Ambientpx setup previously showed that the intensity of the blue LEDs was dropping as the LED was closer to the end of the chain. When displaying pure solid white light this would show as 'warm white' towards the end of the chain. This also happens when increasing the allowed power draw to 2A.

The problem that I have now is that while they both are visible as Farbwerk Nano in the Device Manager, they are not detected in the Aquasuite software.

Is someone aware of the possibilities of running multiple Nano units from a single powered USB hub?Would it matter if I would try a hub which connects to the PC with USB-C?

When plugged into the display's USB hub, one Nano unit is lighting up white when plugged in, the other just flashes the first LED green for a split second when plugging in. Tried all possible orientations and cable combinations. Switching USB ports/cables does not change anything so that difference is somehow specific between the two Farbwerk Nano unit?
I bought one unit in september 2019, the second one I bought early december 2020, so perhaps some minor differences in revision?

Apart from possible data stream issues when using 2 Nano units through an external USB hub, I also considered that it could be related to power capabilities of the used USB hub. Device Manager Power State & Power Capabilities shows as follows:

Display's USB Hub - Active State D0, Capabilities: 0000005D, D0/D2/D3 supported
PC's front USB port - Active State D0, Capabilities: 00000019, D0/D3 supported

I cannot find a reference for the 0x19 and 0x5D capabilities; they could indicate the supported subset (D0/D2/D3) or mean something else.

Thanks for the input!

This is a power issue. You need to get more Power to the Farbwerk Nano.
A regular USB 2.0 port can only provide 0.5A, A USB 3.0/3.1 port can provide up to 0.9A.

Changing the allowed power to 2A will not make a difference if the USB connection from the motherboard can only provide 0.5A or 0.9A..
Using the USB Hub of your monitor will not change the provided power from your motherboard USB connection.

You can try an USB Type C connector, that can supply up to 1,5A.
Or you can use a soldering Iron and improve the power delivery yourself :)
