OCTO Fan Tach Signal to Motherboard

Sonntag, 21. März 2021, 01:38

Hello,

I am new to Aquasuite and have a question about the OCTO fan controller. I just got one (after backorder) and am in the process of switching my fans over to it. I want the OCTO to send a tach signal to my motherboard CPU_FAN header. I think this is possible because the manual, section 12.1 says, "The signal header can be configured as a speed signal output or as a switching output". It then goes on to describe using the Signal header as a switching output with #53216 Power Switch cable connected to the power switch header on the motherboard. It does not describe using it as a speed (tach) signal output, or specify a part number for the required cable which I assume has the small 4-pin connector for the Signal header on one end and a standard 4-pin PWM fan connector on the other end. Can someone clarify if the Signal header can be used to provide a tach signal, and if yes, does Aquacomputer offer the required interface cable?

Thanks in advance.

I don't believe so - AFAIK, the speed signal is so that other devices (Aquaero, D5 NEXT, etc) can read andor control fan speed, while the Power Switch is for shutting down the PC.

If you wanted the motherboard to read fan speed, for some reason, there may be other ways to do it.

What were you wanting it on the CPU_Fan for?

Thank you for your response. It is not essential that the Octo provide a tach signal to the motherboard (Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero). I think the default settings in the Bios will not let the computer boot unless it sees a fan on the CPU_FAN header, but this can be disabled so I will just do that. I was thinking that leaving this enabled, and sending a tach signal would provide an extra level of protection. The Octo manual is curiously deficient in explaining exactly what the Signal output can do, but it does clearly say "The signal header can be configured as a speed signal output or as a switching output." Unfortunately, it only describes using it as a switching output. I will play around with it some more. Thanks again for your insights.
