Hello and NOOB questions

Donnerstag, 6. November 2025, 04:11

Hi I'm Jeff3F and I'm new to aquasuite and octo. I've been water cooling since 2017, but until recently I never had a proper fan/temp controller setup.

I would like to run ALL of my fans/pump off of my OCTO. I don't know about my motherboard, but I hear that motherboards can have errors when there are NO fans/pumps connect to its headers. It is hard to google for this, there are hits about "do I need fans?" and these aren't what I'm trying to find. My motherboard is MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk wifi MAX.

I will soon try the experiment of moving my pump off of the motherboard, but assuming that causes a problem I have an idea.

To understand my idea, please Google for "skip shift eliminator" - it was a mod for GM cars (Camaro/Firebird/Corvette) 25ish years ago to bypass a fuel-efficiency feature GM utilized to sell those cars without a USA "gas guzzler" tax. One installed a resistor cap onto a cable end to fool the car computer into thinking it was activating a solenoid. You could also bypass "skip shift" by driving like a maniac but that's beyond the scope of this thread. 9 miles per gallon was a typical gas mileage but the cars were speedy :-/

So what if the motherboard had a "fan" cable that was connected to a resistor instead of a fan, to trick it into thinking it's controlling a fan? Has anyone resorted to this so that they could run everything through an aquacomputer fan controller?

Thanks! Jeff3F

No idea if what you suggest would work. The only issue not having any fans on the mobo would be the CPU fan in the bios, most bios should allow you to switch it off though. Additionally some Aquacomputer devices can generate an RPM/tacho which can be connected to the mobo CPU fan header and generate a speed signal, like the High Flow NEXT, Aquaero 6 and Power Adjust.

Usually mainboards allow to ignore the fan signal. If this is not possible for your board, you will need a little plug that fakes the RPM signal. This can not be solved with a simple resistor. What you need is often called fan dummy or fan simulator. If you search for it in Google you will find some offers.

Thanks! I feel sheepish. My motherboard does indeed allow me to ignore “no fans”. I am a bit disappointed that I won’t be breaking gout my soldering iron like it’s 2004 and I’m turning down the HSF on my althllon with a resistor dial!

I’m watching the @kaybeetech videos about how to make novel signals to help run the pump curve and how to map it out. It’s probably excessive, but I will enjoy doing it.

Another question - for an Ryzen 9800x3D, CPU burner maxes out my CPU (95C) though I can turn up pump and then it maxes out closer to 88C. I’m sure it is fine for my use but part of me wonders if I should consider reapplying the thermal paste, maybe using some AS4 I have instead of the alphacool apex paste that came with my AC core 1 block. The apex paste was a bit gummy, and against my usual judgement I did use their provided spreader tool instead of my usual X or blob pattern for the CPU.

usually, accelerating the pump has almost no effect, unless it was WAY too slow to begin with. what is the minimum pump speed you run at?
