Aquatube construction question

Donnerstag, 7. April 2005, 01:26

Have been getting some requests from people wanting to know how to do some larger sized tubes to use with Aquatube's. I know where I can get 10mm ID G1/8 fittings so that isn't a real problem. But I am wondering whether the Aquatube has actual G 1/8 threaded holes or did A-C use Legris Carstick products in their manufacture?

Perhaps no one knows or doesn't want to say? How about a high resolution pic of the area where the Plug n Cool fitting goes? From the pic I saw on the product page there appears to be some kind of bushing in place that looks like steel of some type. Does the G 1/8 P&C fitting screw into here? If they are bushings are they pressed or screwed in? If screwed in what thread are they?

I can get all this info when my Aquatube gets here next week, but if I have the right info now I can make plans. ;D

Okay lets put this more simply :)

I want to know if the G 1/8 threads on an Aquatube are machined into the aluminum body or into a bushing that is then pressed or screwed into the Aquatube?

If you look at the Aquatubes that are on the webshop they appear to have a flanged bushing that sits a bit raised up from the aluminum side of the tube. It also appears that the G 1/8 fittings go into this raised surface. Am I correct?

Nope, the thread is machined directly into the aluminium body itsself. Oh, and on a sidenote, what's the point of using 10mm ID tubing when the diameter of the threaded fittings themselves is only 9mm? That's gonna be ~7mm max once you actually put a fitting in...

The 'bushings' you refer to are probably the G1/8 blind plugs which are fitted into any fittings not used.

Thanks for the info about the "bushings."

I was talking of using 10mm OD x 8mm ID tubes when I said that I knew where to get 10mm x G 1/8 fittings. People here in the USA like to mod just about anything ;D So we are always on the lookout for easy ways to try something different. There are people who want to be able to hook up an Aquatube to their large bore wc setup just because it looks 8)

However, now that question has been answered do you think A-C would be willing to make Aquatubes with G 1/4 threads instead of the standard G 1/8? Any idea of what quantities would be needed to do a production run?

you're not the first to ask and probably won't be the last...
ac never has used anything different that g1/8 (ok, besides that radiators... ;)) and i very much doubt they will change that in the future

but if your're able to find a few (or a few more :-X) people that are willing to pay enough... who knows? ;) ;D

Well I guess the key question is what quantity does A-C consider to be a normal production run of Aquatubes? Assuming a production run there shouldn't be any additional charges except tooling related charges. These could be considerably minimized if you had a CNC with a few live spindles so you could do most of the milling, drilling, and tapping using the main drive as an indexing table. Do you guys use such a beast? ;D

Added:

Just thought of a solution. What about just ordering them with bored holes and we could put the right size Legris Carstick in on this side of the pond ;D
