aquagraFX 6800GT on a 7900GT Card?

Dienstag, 4. April 2006, 23:28

Hi

Right now I have a 6800GT leadtek with the aquagraFX mounted. I am considering to buy the 7900GT card, and mount the aquagraFX 6800GT cooler on it. For me it seems that the holes are at the exact same spot. The only problem is the back end on the aquagraFX 6800GT, which I will have to cut off with a saw.

Do you think it is possible to mount the aquagraFX 6800GT on a 7900GT card if I shorten the back end?

Thanks for your help, Michael.

Interesting idea, but I think there's a bit more to it than that.

The all-in-one graphics card coolers that AC produce are designed to cool specific places on your card and there's no guarantee that the 7900 will have exactly the same layout as your 6800.

Also, the blocks are designed to fit around (miss) certain protruding onboard components such as capacitors, etc... once again the two cards would have to be near identical in topside layout for your proposal to work.

If you choose to give it a go (I wouldn't) - good luck with it and let us know how you get on ;)

Thanks for your reply.

If you look at the topside of both the 6800GT and the 7900GT there is no components that whould cause any concern in the GPU area. The memory, GPU and hole placement is also the same (as far as I can tell). The only part were the 6800GT diverse from 7900GT is at the end; The 6800GT is longer and requires cooling on the mosfets. The 7900GT is shorter and doesnt requirer cooling at the end.

And that's why I thought...."Why not just cut away the back end of the AquagraFX 6800GT?".

My only concern is that if the capacitors on the 7900GT are too close to the Memory. Then it will require a split of the AquagraFX in two pieces lol :D

Have anybody done this before?

doubt it it would rather pay £50 then risk breaking a £300 card

Well thats not my concern. My concern is when I start to solder and remove resistors from the card itself to increase voltage ;)
