Huge difference of cooling between the 2 GPUs of the ATI HD5970

Mittwoch, 14. April 2010, 22:25

Hi everybody,

I have the aquaduct 720XT and a GPU Block aquagratiX for HD 5970 (2x RV870) standard (not with Nickel plates). I've got an important difference of cooling between the 2 GPUs. Using games or stress tools like FurMark, I reach 60°C for GPU1 and 100°C for GPU2. Even in the idle state, I've got GPU1=44°C and GPU2=54°C.
Water T°C is around 29°C. The graphic card is from MSI.

I've used Noctua Thermal compound and checked that the compound is set similarly on the 2 GPUs and Memory chips (as explained in the documentation).

Is this a known issue or do you have any advice for me?

Thank you guys,

Do you know if you own the Rev. 2 blocks? They have a small Rev. 2 engraving at the base near one of the GPU surfaces. Can't be overseen if it is there.

Hi Sven,

I can't see any engraving on the external side of the waterblock. Should I unmount it from the graphic card to see it?
I can read "Stand 12/2009" into the documentation delivered with the block. It has been shipped to me on February, 15th 2010.

Its reference is n° 23483 in the Shop: http://shop.aquacomputer.de/product_info…roducts_id=2409

Thanks,

For me it seem that your GPU2 does not have good enough contact with the cooler.
I have the same waterblock, with an Sapphire HD5970 OC.
I run watertemps of 40/44 idle and 61/61 at full stress.
The GPU VRM, runs at 42/43 idle, 72/79 at ful stress
Chrech if you can get a better fit for GPU2.

You have to remove the block to see the engarving (if it is there). It is on the base which has contact to the card.

What is the difference with the Rev.2 blocks?
thanx

Rev. 2 has some small changes on the base to avoid contact problems with specific components of the card.

So could having the rev.1 block cause any problems, I could not see any rev.2 engravings on my block.
thanx
