Noisy "HighFlow" Sensor Fix

Samstag, 7. Juli 2012, 17:30

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this forum and a new user of Aquaero and AC products and I've been very happy so far and impressed with my Aquaero 5 LT having upgraded from an mCubed T-balancer, which, in my opnion, is a good product and does its job, but sadly lacks support and has not had any software, firmware and user interface improvements in years, which it badly needs.
Anyway, to the point of opening this thread concerning a noisy AC "High Flow" sensor, which I have noticed in other threads mentioned a few times. I installed my HF sensor today and after a few hours it developed a clicking noise that was audible from across the room. I decided that this was a rather annoying noise to put up with as I enjoy the benefits of noise reduction with a watercooled PC. I pulled the flowmeter out and opened it up to check if the spindle inside was loose. I have read somewhere else on this forum that someone tried fixing the clicking noise by lightly tapping the spindle to seat it properly in its housing. The spindle in my flowmeter wouldn't budge, it was solidly in place and so I reassembled the flowmeter. I have also read somewhere that positioning the flowmeter horizontally rather than vertically eliminates this type of noise, but that was not an option for me as the space in my case is already severely limited and there is nowhere for me to mount it horizontally.
I thought a little more about it and came up with this on a guess that it might work a little in reducing the loudness of the noise. If you remove the stainless steel top on the flowmeter you will notice around the actual device itself there is a lot of empty space between it, the delrin housing, and the stainless steel cover. I packed this space with a dense memory foam which is then squashed down by the stainless cover, hoping that it would absorbat least some of the noise and make it more bearable.
Something worked. Either the foam deadened any clicking amplified by the cavity in the flowmeter housing or somehow the slight added pressure of the foam on the flowmeter once the stainless cover is replaced pressed the impeller more firmly against the spindle and eliminated any movements on the impeller that led to the clicking. It has been running now for several hours and no clicking noise has reappeared. I have checked the calibration and flow through Aquasuite and have not noticed any difference in the figures compared to those before applying the fix.
Perhaps it was simply tightening the screws that hold the top of the flow meter to the housing that was the true cause for fixing the noise, I don't know. If anyone else has this problem maybe they could experiment and try what I did and see if they have similar results, or just tighten the screws to see what that does. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the foam in the housing as initially I didn't believe that it would work, but now that I have reinstalled it without the infuriating clicking noise I don't want to touch it. If anyone else has already come up with a solution my apologies as I'm a new user and have only browsed the forum a few times. Thanks for your attention.
Happy Watercooling! :)

**08/07/2012 Seems like my fix didn't work after all. After another day the flowmeter developed the clicking noise again. Oh well ...

I already thought that your fix will not eliminate the root of the problem. To get it really fixed you would have to send in your flow sensor.

Thanks I would like to do that, because it is driving me insane. What is the address where I send it? To whose attention do I mark the package? I am in Australia so I am thinking perhaps it would be better just to buy another one to avoid all the postage costs. How likely is it that I will get another noisy one?

You can send it to the following address:

Aqua Computer GmbH & Co. KG
Gelliehaeuser Str. 1
37130 Gleichen
GERMANY

Just include a description of the problem and an copy of the invoice. You can also send it in a padded envelope to save shipping costs. We normally test exactly this sensor and than start to exchange parts and check again if the noise is still there or not.
